Red Shoes

Interview with Sir Matthew Bourne

Our deputy director Toby Davey recently met with Matthew Bourne, artistic director of New Adventures, backstage at Sadler’s Wells to find out more about his new critically acclaimed dance production of The Red Shoes based on the Powell and Pressburger film which continues on tour around the country with audio-described performances.

In Toby’s interview with Matthew Bourne you will also hear about what inspired Matthew to take The Red Shoes on to the dance stage; the relevance of the story of the main character Vicky Page to culture today; how Matthew works with his designer and music arranger on the developments of his productions and why he likes to sit in with the audience and watch his productions from their point of view.

Toby also asked Matthew whether he has ever observed one of the touch tours that happen before an audio-described performance and whether he had ever listened to the live audio description of any of his productions.

Mathew Bourne’s The Red Shoes continues on tour and if you hurry you may be lucky to catch tickets for the audio-described performances at Nottingham Theatre Royal, Bristol Hippodrome and the New Wimbledon Theatre.
