We’ve been happily working from our office in Spitalfields in East London since 2004, which we’ve shared with Stagetext (who make theatre and culture accessible to deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people) for over ten years. The area has changed a lot since then, and our landlord will be increasing the rent in the New Year to a level we can’t afford.
So, we’re moving – together with Stagetext of course – to a new office near Elephant and Castle in London SE1 in early January that offers more affordable rent. The new office is light and airy, and will be quieter than busy Commercial Street, but still well connected to local and national theatres and museums. However, we need some help make it more accessible.
We’ve been searching for a new office for about a year, and have discovered that accessible offices – which all charities should have – come at a premium, which most small charities can’t afford. We worked out that it would be more affordable to make alterations to a new office rather than to find somewhere that is already fully accessible, but as the new office is not considered a public space, we are not eligible for any grants to help us do it. So both Stagetext and VocalEyes are running a Christmas campaign to raise the money to help make this happen.
So this is where you come in… please add us to your Christmas list!
We are trying to raise £10,000 over the Christmas period to help pay for installation of a wheelchair lift and adapting the toilet to make it accessible.
We’d be very grateful for any contributions to help us practice what we advocate for in our State of Theatre / State of Museum Access reports. Help us be accessible: All donations will go towards ensuring VocalEyes and Stagetext are not only providing access to arts and heritage, but also for our staff, trustees and visitors.
If you prefer to make a donation to VocalEyes directly, please use our JustGiving page.
Any donation, however large or small is welcome and gratefully received.
