Museums and heritage sites: online training

VocalEyes are delighted to announce a new series of online training courses, suitable for individuals working within the museums and heritage sector.

Participants can increase their skills in inclusive practice, in order to create accessible digital content, and provide a welcoming on-site experience for blind and visually impaired visitors. All sessions will be delivered by VocalEyes’ team of staff, audio describers and visual awareness trainers. Please find outlines of the courses below, with session dates and times and how to book.

Visual Awareness training

2-hour online session, delivered via Zoom, £50 +VAT per person

This two-hour visual awareness training course will introduce skills and information to equip people working within the museums and heritage sector to support blind and visually impaired visitors. It will be delivered by a visual awareness trainer and an audio describer.

Aims

The aim of the course is to give trainees an introductory understanding of visual impairment, and support them to identify what they can do to reduce barriers to access for visitors with sight loss. Trainees will learn how to effectively welcome and communicate with blind and visually impaired people. Ways to remain digitally accessible will also be considered.

Objectives

On completion of the course trainees will have been supported to:

  1. Consider the lived experience of blind and visually impaired people, and how sight loss can affect people in different ways.
  2. Identify the range of barriers visually impaired visitors and colleagues may encounter at the museum, and consider how to mitigate them
  3. Learn how to welcome and communicate with blind and visually impaired people using appropriate language
  4. Learn the basic principles of audio description, and how to describe a route or space.
  5. Consider digital accessibility for people with sight loss
