The address of the Arcola Theatre is 24 Ashwin St, London E8 3DL. It’s a few minutes’ walk from both Dalston Kingsland station and Dalston Junction.
Dalston Kingsland connects up with the Victoria line at Highbury and Islington. Dalston Junction connects with the Jubilee Line at Canada Water.
If you are coming from Dalston Kingsland, the Arcola theatre is by McDonalds. If you are coming from Dalston Junction, the theatre is opposite a large red church. If you would like directions to the theatre there are further details on the theatre’s website, www.arcolatheatre.com. Or you can telephone or email using the details given at the end of this information.
Please note that if you are travelling to Dalston via Highbury and Islington during an Arsenal match day, it will be much busier than usual.
There are two entrances to the theatre – the Bar entrance which opens from 5pm, and the foyer and box office entrance which opens from 10am.
The Bar entrance has 2 stone steps up to a glass door which opens towards you. There is then a further short flight of steps up, to get to the bar. To get to the Foyer and Box Office go through the bar, turn right and go down a short flight of stairs.
The Foyer and Box Office entrance has level access. It has large blue doors which will be pinned open, followed by an internal door which opens towards you. The main foyer has ambient lighting and LED coloured lights. The Box office is on your right as you enter. It has a low level desk. The foyer is a long thin area, which leads to the steps up to the bar. There is a sofa area on the right, just before the steps. There is also a café next to the box office, where you can get tea, coffee, cakes and sandwiches.
Wi Fi is available throughout the foyer.
If you are arriving by car, you can be dropped off outside the main foyer and box office entrance on Ashwin Street. Ashwin Street is a dead-end, but cars can turn around in front of the theatre to go back onto Dalston Lane.
The theatre does not have any direct parking outside for customers. The closest car park is Bently Road, which is a 4 to 5 minute walk from the theatre. Further information is available on the Hackney Council website: www.hackney.gov.uk.
The following buses stop by the theatre – numbers 242, 149, 38, 30, 56 and 243.
The theatre staff can provide a local taxi number if you need one, or you can call ‘Great Cars’ on 020 7254 2020.
The toilets are in the basement level. You can either take the lift or the stairs. Please ask a member of staff to assist you if you wish to use the lift, as it is an access lift rather than a standard building lift. The gentlemen’s toilet is opposite the lift, and the ladies’ are to the right of the gents. For both, the doors open away from you. There is an accessible toilet to the right again, and door opens towards you.
Please ask a member of staff for your headset and large print or braille cast list. If you would like to listen to the introductory notes 15 minutes before the start of the performance, you should collect your headset in good time to take your seat. Staff will be able to direct you.
The Arcola Theatre has 2 studio spaces and 2 rehearsal rooms. Studio 1 has level Access from the main foyer entrance in Ashwin Street. Studio 2 is on the lower level of the theatre. The route to Studio 2 from the foyer involves going up some stairs as well as down, so you may wish to ask a member of staff to assist you. Alternatively, you may use the lift. Studios 3 and 4 are upstairs
Studio 2 is a rectangular room with bare brick walls, and seats 100 people on padded bench seating, which is on three sides of the performance space. Seating is unreserved, although a seat can be reserved on request.
Studio 1 seats up to 180 people, on padded chairs.
