Duchess Theatre

Access Information

The address of The Duchess Theatre is Catherine Street, Aldwych, London, WC2B 5LA. It’s situated opposite the Novello Theatre.

If you are arriving by car you can be dropped off on Catherine Street, directly outside the main entrance. The nearest LCC car park is in Drury Lane, under the New London Theatre. You can receive a discount on parking charges by asking the theatre to stamp your parking ticket.

If you are travelling by bus, the number RV1 stops directly opposite the theatre. Numerous other buses stop on the Aldwych or on the nearby Strand. The nearest tube station is Covent Garden, which is about 5 minutes walk.

The main entrance to The Duchess theatre has one low step up to 3 sets of glass double doors, which open towards you. Depending on the weather, they may be pinned open prior to a performance.

As you enter, the box office is directly opposite. There’s also a moveable counter which will be either to the right or left of the box office, selling programmes and confectionary. To the right of the foyer is the entrance to the foyer bar, and to the left a wide stairway leading down to the stalls, and a narrower staircase leading up to the Dress and Upper Circles.

Please ask a member of the theatre staff for headsets, large print and Braille cast lists. If you would like to listen to the introductory notes 15 minutes before the start of the performance, you should collect your headset in good time to take your seat.

There’s an accessible toilet on the stalls level, as well as standard toilets both in the stalls and on the Dress Circle level.
To get down to the stalls there are 20 steps. There are 27 steps up to the Dress Circle.
As well as the foyer bar, there’s a bar at the back of the stalls.

The auditorium seats over 500 people, on Stalls, Dress and Upper Circle levels. The theatre was built in 1929, named after the then Duchess of York who went on to become Queen and then Queen Mother.
All the seats are flip up, and are arranged in one block with aisles either side. In the stalls the aisles slope down gently towards the stage and on the upper levels there are steps.

There are two wheelchair positions in the stalls. If you are a wheelchair user, please inform the theatre, who will arrange for an AAT stair climber to be available and qualified staff to operate it.
