The main entrance to the Grand Opera House, York is situated on Cumberland Street. This entrance will open 1.5 hours before a performance begins. There are 3 steps into the building from this entrance leading to doors at the bottom. The doors will generally be hooked open, however if they are not they can be pushed or pulled, and are quite light.
Our Box Office is situated on Clifford Street. You are able to access the main auditorium from this entrance from around 45 minutes before a performance begins. Whilst the Box Office is on street level, there are a minimum of fifteen steps to walk down in order to gain access the auditorium. These doors open towards you.
We do also have a street-level access entrance on King Street (parallel to Cumberland Street). If this entrance is needed by patrons, we ask that you contact our Box Office upon arrival who will ensure that a member of staff is able to meet you there. These doors will open towards you.
The nearest train station to the Grand Opera House is York Station. It is a maximum 20-minute walk from the train station to the theatre, but there are a number of buses that stop at the top of the street. For further information regarding buses, please contact the theatre. The nearest car parks to the theatre are Clifford’s Tower car park and St George’s Field. Blue Badge Holders are able to park on King Street provided they are not blocking any fire doors.
If you need any assistance upon your arrival, please ask the nearest member of staff, who will be happy to help you in any way you need. All staff undergo access training and will be happy to guide you to your required destination.
Audio Described performances are available for a number of our week long shows. All of our Audio Described shows include a touch tour; if a touch tour is required, please notify our Access Co-Ordinator or Box Office at least 7 days in advance. Introductory notes are available prior to Audio Described performances; if this is required, we ask that you collect your headset and take your seat in good time. They will begin 15 minutes before the performance begins.
Guide dogs are welcome in all areas of the building. They are permitted inside the auditorium during shows; if you would rather leave your guide dog with a member of staff when the show is on, please notify us at least seven days in advance. Please be aware that it is not always possible for this to happen.
