Access Information:

The New Wolsey theatre is situated on Civic Drive in the Westgate area of Ipswich. The address is: New Wolsey Theatre, Civic Drive, Ipswich, IP1 2AS.

The theatre seats 400 people, it was designed by the architect Roderick Ham, and was opened on 31 October 1979 by HRH Princess Alexandra

For daytime productions the Ipswich Shuttle Bus stops just outside the theatre on Civic Drive. This service runs from 7.00am to 7.00pm. More information is available from suffolkonboard.com

Ipswich Dial-A-Ride Ltd or IDaR, provides wheelchair accessible minibuses- call 08453 479 379 between 10.30am and 4.00pm.

The most convenient drop off and collection point for taxis is at the rear of the theatre by the Stage Door. The rear of the theatre is on Chapman Lane accessible via Black Horse Lane. From there the theatre is accessible via a ramp to the side of the building.

If you are travelling by car, for the easiest access the theatre recommends the Pay and Display Car Park accessible from Black Horse Lane, then left to the end of Chapman Lane where there are 5 Blue Badge Parking Bays. Parking charges do apply. The theatre is then accessible via a ramp.

If you are travelling by car from London, Chelmsford and Colchester:
Take the A12 to Ipswich. At the roundabout where the A12 and the A14 intersect take the second exit onto the A1214. Go straight over the next roundabout (Tesco is on your left) and continue on London Road through several sets of traffic lights. You will eventually see Sainsbury’s on your left at a set of traffic lights – continue straight, go straight through 2 more sets of traffic lights onto Handford Road. At the next roundabout where Handford Road meets Civic Drive, you’ll find the entrance to the pay & display car parks.

By Car from Southwold, Aldeburgh and Woodbridge:
Take the Woodbridge Road (A1214) into Ipswich, turn left on Argyle Street, take a right onto St Helen’s Street, continue straight on Crown Street to the roundabout, and take the first exit – which takes you past the theatre. At the next roundabout where Handford Road meets Civic Drive, you’ll find the entrance to the pay & display car parks.

By car from Felixstowe:
Take the A1156 into Ipswich from the A14. Continue straight on Bishop’s Hill and on Fore Hamlet. Bear left on A1156 and continue straight on Fore Street. Take a left onto Salthouse Street, bear right onto Key Street, continue straight on College Street, left onto Bridge Street, bear left onto Grey Friars Road, right onto Franciscan Way, continue straight on Princes Street and bear left onto Civic Drive. At the next roundabout where Handford Road meets Civic Drive, you’ll find the entrance to the pay & display car parks.

Useful information and contact numbers

The foyers and auditorium are accessible from the street without encountering any steps with automated doors at the entrance. Row C and Row K are flat level access (Row K via the passenger lift). For each subsequent row there are two steps. There are six spaces available for wheelchair users in the auditorium, four in Row C and two in Row K.

Guide dogs are welcome throughout the building and, if you prefer, we will happily look after your dog whilst you watch the performance.

The Box Office is located inside the main entrance. It has a low level service counter. There is one accessible toilet on the ground floor near to the Café Bar and one in the Bar on the first floor. You can pre-order interval drinks to avoid queuing.

There is a Hearing System in the auditorium, and you will need a headset to take advantage of it. Head sets are collected from the Box Office for a returnable deposit of £10.00. You can either choose an in-ear headset that acts as headphones or a personal hearing loop by switching your hearing aid to ‘T’.

Touch Tours for audience members who are blind or partially sighted are available before Audio Described performances. Touch tours introduce blind and partially sighted visitors to the arrangement of the stage and help participants to engage with the ideas, props and costumes.
