The Theatre Royal York is opposite the Art Gallery and very close to the Minster.

York Railway Station is just 10 minutes’ walk away.  After exiting the main entrance of the station turn left and continue past the Principal Hotel, going straight over the crossroads. Follow the road under the city walls, then turn left and head over Lendal Bridge. The Minster will be in front of you as you pass York Museum Gardens on your left. At the crossroads turn left, and York Theatre Royal is in front of you, on the right-hand side of the road. The De Grey Rooms is immediately adjacent.

A number of local bus services stop directly outside the theatre, including numbers 1, 2, 5, 5A, 6, 19, 29, 30, 31, 31X, 40, 56, 58, 812 and 884 – ask for the Theatre Royal stop. For more information on bus routes and times, please visit the First and Transdev websites.

The Theatre is approximately 40 minutes’ drive from Harrogate, 45 minutes from Leeds (city centre), 1 hour from Hull, and 30 minutes from junction 45 of the A1(M). There are a number of car parks close to the Theatre, but space can be limited so please allow enough time to park and walk in. The city centre car parks can be expensive, so you may want to use York’s Park & Ride scheme for a day visit.

The theatre welcomes all theatregoers and provide an extensive range of services. The Theatre has level entrances to the foyer, with automatic doors and a low counter at Box Office. There is lift access to the Main House, Dress Circle, and Studio seating, with accessible toilets on both ground floor and first floor levels.

Wheelchair spaces are available in the Main House Stalls and Dress Circle, and in the Studio. Please request a wheelchair space at the time of booking. If you have limited mobility, our Box Office team can advise on the best areas to sit and whether there are any steps to navigate.

The theatre offers concession tickets for patrons with disabilities and half price companion or carer tickets.

Audio described, captioned and BSL interpreted performances are available for many performances with pre-show Touch Tours also available, usually taking place an hour before the performance starts. Please book in advance through the Box Office.

Assistance Dogs are welcome in all areas of the theatre and a complimentary dog-sitting service can be arranged – please request this service at the time of booking.

The theatre uses a radio system for audio description; the radio signal is transmitted across the whole auditorium. Receivers, either stethoscope models, or belt-pack models with separate headphones, will be supplied by the theatre and staff will demonstrate how to use them. You may want to bring your own headphones and request a belt-pack receiver.
